Part-Day Preschool Program Educators

Lead Educator

My name is Kelly Zecca, and this will be my third year working at Deer Lake East Preschool. I have been married to my husband Angelo for 17 years and have three children, Olivia who is 14 years old, Angelo Jr who just turned 12 and Ava who just turned 8. I finished my schooling from Burnaby Continuing Education in June 2016 after a 3-year program and could not be more excited about the path I have chosen to be an Early Childhood Educator. I feel all children should be valued for who they are as an individual and I look forward to my adventure with you and your children.

Emily was born and grew up in China. She started her own family when she moved to Canada. She loves Vancouver, as she thinks this is an amazing place to live and explore. In her spare time, she loves music, cooking, travelling and reading. She believes that every child is unique, capable and creative. Emily loves working with children and always follows children’s ideas to expand their learning and explorations.

Karen started in the field of education over 10 years ago when she went to Japan to teach English to elementary school age and kindergarten children. Even though this was a big change from the tourism field in which she started, she quickly realized that working with young children was invigorating and such a rewarding field to be in. After teaching in Japan and travelling around, Karen returned to Vancouver in 2018 and began her studies in Early Childhood Education. Having grown up and playing outdoors as a child, Karen values the time that is spent outdoors because children learn so much from playing.

Judy started working as an Early Childhood Educator in 1983. Since that time she has had many wonderful opportunities in this field and has worked with children from 0 - 19yrs.

Along with many years of working on the floor with the children, she has had the opportunity to work in the role of consultant to child care settings and families, managing child care facilities and teaching Early Childhood Education at the college level. It has always been her dream to be able to support children and families in her own preschool and she was thrilled when this came to be in September 2011.

As the Manager of Deer Lake Daycare, she feels so honored to have a staff team that is committed to providing a quality preschool program.  We are proud to offer an inclusive, play based setting where we work hard to instill a love and an excitement of learning. In order to reach that goal we encourage and support children to learn to investigate, create and take appropriate risks in and outside of our classroom.

Hello! My name is Shaina Robertshaw. I have been working in the Early Childhood field for 3 years now, and still am in the processes of completing my 4 year ECE. I have worked with Infant-Toddlers and 3-5 year olds which has helped me better understand the stages of Early Childhood development. I am grateful to be working with Deer Lake Childcare since May 2019. I love to be outdoors with my family, doing creative projects, cooking and travelling. My hope in my ECE journey is to foster children’s individual learning and development, to empower them to become critical thinkers and problem solvers, to inspire them to follow their dreams and for them to believe in their immense capabilities.

My name is Jane Chan. I graduated from Burnaby Community & Continuing Education in 2020. I have worked as a substitute teacher at Deer Lake Preschool, since 2018. I am really excited to join and be a part of the Deer Lake team.

While I was in Hong Kong, I volunteered at a church for the children’s ministry for 7 years. I moved back to Vancouver in 2016, and I decided to expand my knowledge and skills.

I believe that every child is unique, and that they are full of wonders. I also believe that children are motivated to learn when they feel joyful to explore their surroundings. I value diversity in early childhood education. To me, it is important to nurture children in a healthy and inclusive environment, so they can feel appreciated, and feel that their diverse beliefs and cultures are valued.

Samantha started to work with families and children in Burnaby since 2005, as she operated her own registered-licensed-not-required family day care.  She has discovered her passion in the field and was inspired by a local organization that she took the step further to study and learn and become an early childhood educator. She is grateful to work along side with the amazing team at Deer Lake Child Care and feel fortunate to be part of the team. Her hope is the families and children who come to join this community would establish the sense of belonging and with that we will together see the children to thrive confidently around their worlds.

My name is Ivy Leung. I was born in Hong Kong and came to Vancouver with my family in 1994. I studied and graduated in UBC and Blanche MacDonald Centre. After working in the Fashion Merchandising field for 6 years, I had decided to make a change in the working environment.  I always enjoy spending time with children, engaging with them, and exploring deeply with them.  After my son was born, I had planned to extend my passion and knowledge further into Early Childhood training.  Being with my son and daughter everyday, I understand that every child is unique, and it is a pleasurable moment to watch them growing, learning and achieving in their own paths. I completed my Basic ECE Certification in 2018, and have been working in Deer Lake Preschool for 2 years.  I am very excited to be part of the Deer Lake Preschool Team whereas I could extend my passion for childcare into a great career. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with all of you!

Jessica started in the field of education in 2010, volunteering with elementary school age children in Chilliwack. Moving out to Vancouver and studying at Simon Fraser University, Jessica worked part-time as an English teacher for an after school program. Soon after, Jessica found her love working with younger children as an early childhood assistant and started her studies in Early Childhood Education in 2018.  Jessica is a newlywed, and in her spare time, she loves photography, baking, and travelling. Jessica loves working with children and values children’s uniqueness and creativity. She is excited to be part of the Deer Lake Preschool team.
